Every institution has its own language for what goes on there and MSU is no different. Understanding a few definitions will make your life at MSU easier--both physically and mentally.

Drop

This is what needs to be done if you would like to cancel one or more of your classes (but you will still be enrolled in other classes).

To do this, log into WebWorld through your my.MSUTEXAS portal and drop the class online. You DO NOT need to go to the Registrar's Office (in the Hardin Building) or the Dean of Students Office (in the Clark Student Center) to drop a class.

However, if you are only enrolled in one class for the semester and wish to cancel it, you are not dropping but withdrawing.

Withdrawing

This is what needs to be done if you want to cancel the ONLY class you're enrolled in or ALL of the classes you're enrolled in for a semester.

To do this -- go to the Student Affairs Office (in the Clark Student Center Room 108) and someone will fill out a withdrawal form for you. You may also email student.affairs@msutexas.edu or call 940-397-7400. Be sure to include your MSU ID number on the email.

Please be aware that the date of withdrawal will affect your refund and the grade received. You DO NOT need to go to the Registrar's Office to do a withdrawal. However, if you're wanting to cancel your classes before the semester has started you want to request an invalidation.

Invalidation

This is what needs to be done if you want to cancel your registration for a semester before classes have even started.

To do this -- go to the Student Affairs Office (in the Clark Student Center Room 108) and someone will take the relevant information. You may also email student.affairs@msutexas.edu or call 940-397-7400. Be sure to include your MSU ID number on the email.

The tuition refund is 100% for invalidations. DO NOT go to the Registrar's Office to request an invalidation. If you decided not to attend MSU but did nothing to cancel your registration and you made no payment arrangements for tuition/fees or had any financial aid or scholarships post to your MSU account, you will be voided.

Voided

This is what is done to your registration for non-payment of tuition and fees by the Business Office. Your class registration for the semester is CANCELLED--it's as if you never even registered. This is done administratively--you do not go anywhere to fill out paperwork or make a request. Voiding is an administrative procedure for non-payment; it is not an option that is available to you.

However, you WILL NOT be voided if you have any financial aid, grants, stipends, scholarships, or payments applied to your MSU account for the semester. If any credits or payments have posted on your account, even if you never attend class, you will be counted as enrolled and will owe tuition for the course(s). At the end of the semester, you would likely receive a grade of "F" for those classes you never attended so it always best to request a withdrawal or invalidation if you are not planning to complete courses.

So take charge of your academic transcript. If you register for classes and then change your mind, INVALIDATE before the semester begins, or WITHDRAW after classes begin and before the deadline to receive a "W" grade. And finally, never assume you will be voided for non-payment. It is your responsibility to WITHDRAW or INVALIDATE properly. Always remember to get an electronic or printed copy of your schedule to verify and confirm the classes in which you are enrolled are the correct ones.

A word about REFUNDS - the refund period for a dropped class or classes is different than the refund period for withdrawals. Please consult the schedule of classes or Business Office website for the appropriate refund schedule.
