Student Spotlight: Being Recognized for Excellence and Service

Meet Guillermo Herrera '07. He earned his Bachelor of Science in Respiratory Care from MSU Texas.

Herrera received the Distinguished Alumnus honor from the Robert D. & Carol Gunn College of Health Sciences & Human Services in 2016 for his work as an ECMO (Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation) manager at Cook Children's Medical Center in Fort Worth, Texas.

ECMO is a technique that uses a machine to take over the work of the lungs, and sometimes the heart, of critically ill patients.

Herrera also educates medical professionals around the world on ECMO. He is a striking example of the MSU Texas commitment to community and integrity that can be accomplished through a career in the health sciences.

Get Involved With Academic Organizations

Pursuing a professional discipline is an experience best completed alongside a supportive community. Getting involved with academic student organizations is an excellent way to find support in your major from peers and professors, develop a deeper understanding of your studies, and network with other professionals in your field.

My most memorable experience at Midwestern State University was being part of the dental hygiene program! I met lifelong friends and made wonderful connections with the professors. It really is the best program to be a part of. It is hard work, but so rewarding.
