As part of the Office of Sponsored Programs and Research mission to support and enhance research across MSU Texas, Intramural Grants are designed to encourage, facilitate, and support MSU Texas research. The grants are intended to support research efforts of faculty, staff, and graduate students. The term “research” is used broadly, and includes traditional research, creative endeavors, and all forms of scholarly expression.

The number of awards made are contingent on the availability of funds as well as the quality and quantity of applications received.

For summer 2019, three grant categories are accepting submissions.

Summer 2019 Intramural Grant Programs
Grant Description Deadline Individual Award Values (not to exceed)
Research Equipment Grants April 3, 2019 $5,000
Field Research Support Grants April 3, 2019 $5,000 (research funding only), or $7,500 (if both research and equipment funds are requested)

Research Equipment Grants

Research Equipment Grants (Summer 2019)
  • Deadline for Application: April 3, 2019 at 5 p.m.
  • Grant funding period: May 1, 2019-Aug. 31, 2019
  • Funding limit: $5,000

The Research Equipment Grants program supports the purchase or development of research equipment to be used by individual investigators or teams of investigators working on innovative projects that already have or will have the potential for external support. Eligible projects must demonstrate how the equipment enhancement will benefit research at MSU Texas with respect to scholarship and external funding portfolios. All funding requested through this program must be used for equipment.

Please see the Guidelines, Application Forms, and Templates tab for the full guidelines and application materials.

Field Research Support Grants

Field Research Support Grants (Summer)
  • Deadline for Application: April 3, 2019 at 5 p.m.
  • Grant funding period: May 1, 2019-Aug. 31, 2019
  • Funding limit: Two categories of funding are available. Faculty are eligible to apply for:
    • research/creative endeavor funding (limit $5,000); or
    • research-related equipment funding (limit $5,000); or
    • both categories of funding (limit $7,500).

The faculty field research support grant is designed to support research and creative activities of faculty members gathering data from the field (including, but not limited to, field/ground research and archival research; gathering pilot data). The FRS grants are considered startup funds for research, in that they should lead to the growth and development of continuing research programs. They are not a source of continuing support for an ongoing program, nor should they be viewed as an alternative source of funds for programs already developed to a level that normally would justify support from external agencies nor travel funds to attend or present at professional meetings. Research and creative activities will be broadly interpreted; therefore, a large range of activities can be supported. Faculty members are encouraged to submit proposals for projects that have a potential to produce future externally funded support.

Please see the Guidelines, Application Forms, and Templates tab for the full guidelines and application materials.

Donor-Funded Grants to Research Responses to Sexual Misconduct on College Campuses

Donor-Funded Grants to Research Responses to Sexual Misconduct on College Campuses
  • Deadline for Application: April 3, 2019 at 5 p.m.
  • Grant funding period: The award period begins on May 1, 2019. Results from grant-funded research are expected to be disseminated nationally, preferably no later than 2020.
  • Funding limit: Two categories of funding are available:
    • Tenured Faculty Funding: up to $5,000
    • Professional Staff or Student Funding: up to $2,500

An anonymous donor has established a fund to research responses to sexual misconduct on college campuses using MSU as a case study. The donor hopes that the immediacy of this research might serve to improve processes that can address and reduce the devastating impact of sexual misconduct on today’s college students.  The donor, who has had a lifelong interest in enhancing the safety of students on college campuses, said that an enormous opportunity exists at this point in time to make important strides in this area.  It is hoped that by studying processes in place at MSU Texas and their impact on student safety, significant improvement might be facilitated on campuses across the nation.

The gift will fund competitive research projects in the following fields:

  • Behavioral and social sciences;
  • Criminal justice;
  • Mass communication;
  • Higher education practice and policy; and
  • Student affairs.

The outcomes of activities funded through this grant must be published studies or poster or oral presentations of national stature.

Applications are encouraged from tenured faculty, professional staff in applicable fields, and students conducting research supervised by tenured faculty, and will be determined by existing policies in place for intramural grants awarded through the Office of Sponsored Programs and Research. Funding requests may vary, but should not exceed $5,000 for faculty and $2,500 for staff or students.

Please see the Guidelines, Application Forms, and Templates tab for the full guidelines and application materials.
