The chemistry program of Midwestern State University emphasizes personalized instruction and student research. Students receive direct individual attention by the faculty of Ph.D. chemists in small classes and seminar groups and are encouraged to start work on a research project as early as the second year of study.

This commitment has been supported by over $1.3 million in faculty and departmental research grants and student research scholarships. Results from undergraduate research projects have been presented at regional and national conferences and published in scholarly journals with international distribution.

The MSU Chemistry Program receives certification through the American Chemical Society (ACS) and has since 1970. MSU offers three options for the chemistry major and an additional ACS certification for select degree plans.

Programs of Study

Option A - Professional: This program provides the academic foundation for students who may wish to continue their studies in graduate chemistry, chemical engineering, or biochemistry. Students completing this program with three additional advanced chemistry hours and a chemistry GPA of 2.5 or better will be certified by the Committee on Professional Training of the American Chemical Society.

Pre-Professional Programs

Pre-professional programs are designed for students interested in dentistry, medicine, pharmacy, physical therapy and veterinary school and who wish to use their undergraduate program to get the prerequisites before applying to their program and choice.

Pre-professional is not a major—it is a focus. This focus will help you pick outthe courses and activities to increase your ability to be admitted into a professional program. Competition for limited spots in professional programs is high, and you will need to find ways to academically prepare and differentiate yourself for admission.

Five pre-professional programs are supported by programs in the McCoy College:

MSU uses a Health Professions Advisory Committee (HPAC) to advise pre-professional students, write letters of recommendation, provide scholarships, and conduct mock interviews. For more information and forms, please visit our HPAC webpage.
