The McCoy School of Engineering offers some of the most affordable engineering programs in Texas.
Program: Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering
Mechanical engineering is an ABET-accredited program. It provides Mechanical Engineering students with a broad education to prepare them for employment or continue their education with a master's or Ph.D. program. Graduates work in various areas, including automotive, space, transportation, computer, construction, heating and cooling, and power generation.
Program: Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering
Electrical Engineering is a new program that prepares students for employment or to continue their education with a master's or Ph.D. program. Students learn integrated circuit design, robotics, digital signal processing, electrical power design, and control systems. The degree prepares for careers that encourage innovation and impact every industry including aerospace, telecommunications, artificial intelligence (AI), and robotics.
Program: Bachelor of Science in Industrial Technology
Industrial Technology follows the guidelines of the Association of Technology Management and Applied Engineering (ATMAE). Students learn safety, supply chain, facilities design, energy, construction, production, and project planning. The degree prepares graduates to operate and maintain complex industrial systems in manufacturing, oil/gas, education, and government.
Minor: Mechanical Engineering
The mechanical engineering minor is designed for students who want to supplement their current major with engineering concepts. It is especially helpful for biology or chemistry majors, who want to go on to graduate school. However, other majors can also benefit from this minor.
Minor: Petroleum Engineering
Students from various disciplines can minor in petroleum engineering, including majors in engineering, geosciences, or chemistry who seek employment in the petroleum industry after graduation.

Since joining MSU Texas in August 2014, Dr. Mahmoud Elsharafi has cultivated a deep connection with the Southwestern Petroleum Short Course (SWPSC) has partnered with Texas Tech University. Attending nearly every year, Dr. Elsharafi has mentored dozens of students, co-published numerous research papers, and bridged the gap between academia and the oil and gas industry. This ongoing relationship gives students unparalleled access to industry experts and cutting-edge operational knowledge. At the SWPSC conference in 2026 in Lubbock, Texas, faculty and students had a great opportunity to attend professional speakers’ presentations and talk with people who have experience in the oil industry. Faculty and students had a chance to visit Texas Tech University’s electrical and petroleum departments. The electrical department at Texas Tech is willing to help our new electrical department. We saved $3300 in registration fees for the conference since MSU is a part of the Texas Tech system. Dr. Elsharafi drove all participants to Lubbock and back to MSU using a university van.
Since spring 2024, the Southwestern Petroleum Short Course Association has supported our Petroleum Engineering Minor program. So far, they have gifted MSU Texas with $52500 which was used for scholarships for the program. In spring 2026, the Southwestern Petroleum Short Course Association agreed to provide MSU Texas with a Gift of $22500. Dr. Elsharafi worked with the Director of Donor Relations and Stewardship, University Advancement (Laura Peterson), on the grant awards and report preparation. Dr. Elsharafi nominated 22 students from engineering and science departments to receive the scholarship awards.
In spring 2026, one of Dr. Elsharafi's students, Joshua Muroi, received the 1st Place Award of $1500 for the Poster Contest in Spring 2026 for his research on “Electrochemical Potential of Produced-Water-Mud Systems”. Joshua Award announced at the Southwestern Petroleum Short Course (SWPSC) at Texas Tech University. He also received 2nd Place, Oral Presentation: Awarded at the URG2025 Undergraduate Research Symposium at MSU Texas, Fall 2025.
