Academic Probation

Academic probation occurs when a student falls below a certain cumulative GPA. This is just a warning to give you an opportunity to bring up your GPA or risk being suspended from school.

What is the First Year Probation Program?
In an effort to provide early intervention for freshmen who are placed on probation, the First Year Probation Program was developed in Fall 2002.  Students in the program are new or transfer freshmen who have less than 30 hours, and a grade point average (GPA) of less than 1.70.

A probation hold is placed in WebWorld for each of these students and they are sent a letter listing their requirements for the next semester. They are required to enroll for MWSU 1003 - Skills for Success, repeat two classes in which grades of D or F were earned. Students who need to be full-time may choose additional classes, but may not register for more than 15 semester hours. All of these students must meet with their advisors to clear these holds.

At the end of each Fall and Spring term, a new cohort will be selected. We are hopeful that this early intervention will direct the student's academic studies toward success.

What if I’m not in my first year, but I am on probation?

Even if you have completed more than 30 hours or are not in your first year at MSU, there is still value in taking the Skills for Success class. You should also talk to your advisor about what your options are and whether you should repeat courses or not to bring up your GPA.
