What is 'Fixed-Rate Designated Tuition'?

With fixed-rate designated tuition, your tuition rate will stay the same over the course of four years (12 consecutive semesters). A consistent cost per credit hour is designed to help you have the information you need to make a financial plan and graduate on time without having to factor in unpredictable costs and expenses.

To receive fixed-rate designated tuition, you will need to opt in to the Fixed Tuition Plan.

How the Fixed Tuition Plan Works

Students who choose the Fixed Tuition Plan remain on the plan for four consecutive academic years, including summer terms. Four academic years is defined as 12 consecutive semesters, with summer (regardless of the number of summer sessions completed) counting as one term. If you do not graduate within four academic years, you will then be subject to standard designated tuition rates.

In the event that you leave MSU Texas for one or more semesters, you can resume your Fixed Tuition Plan when you return, but the time you were away still counts toward the four consecutive years allowed as part of the plan.

Students who continue their graduate education with MSU Texas but who have not exhausted the 12 consecutive semesters of the Fixed Tuition Plan will pay the designated tuition of the current term rather than the fixed plan rate.

How to Opt In to the Fixed Tuition Plan

Select the Fixed Tuition Plan option online when you register for your first semester at MSU Texas. If you do not select the option during registration, you may still choose the Fixed Tuition Plan, as long as you do so before the Fixed Tuition Plan deadline, which is 5 p.m. on the Friday before the first official class day of your first semester.

Students who do not select the Fixed Tuition Plan for their semester lose the option for the duration of their undergraduate education. However, if you enroll at MSU Texas for the first time during a summer session, you will have the opportunity to select the Fixed Tuition Plan during registration for the following fall semester.

Understanding Standard, Fixed, and Designated Tuition

Standard vs. Fixed Tuition
MSU's standard tuition rate changes slightly each year, while the fixed rate keeps your tuition rate at the same price each semester for the duration of four years.

Designated Tuition
Undergraduate tuition is broken down into two components: state tuition and designated tuition. Designated tuition is a local tuition collected to support the operations and activities of the university. The Fixed Tuition Plan only locks in your designated tuition rate.
