Understand Explosions:

The cause of an explosion can have many sources, but the outcome is the same. Fire, heat, deafening sound, and a bright flash are all physical characteristics of an explosion. Sources might include but are not limited to: Natural Gas Leak, Improvised Explosive Device (IED), Hazardous Materials Incident, and an Aircraft Crash.

Before an Explosion:

Inform: Learn about what you need to do in case of a bomb threat or finding suspicious packages. As well as what to do in a fire emergency and campus evacuation.

During an Explosion:

In the event of a violent explosion occurs on campus that could render a building or area unsafe, take these emergency directives to increase your chance of survival:

Cover: Immediately take cover under tables, desks, and other sturdy objects that give protection against glass and debris. 

Notify: After the main explosion has passed, contact 9-1-1. Tell the dispatcher your location, what happened, your name, and anything that might ask. 

Alert: If necessary, activate the building's fire alarm system. Help evacuate people in your immediate area.

Evacuate: Leave and get out of the area stay at least 200 feet away from the incident. Leave a path from emergency personnel and their vehicles. When evacuating and there is a person that cannot evacuate on their own, call MSUPD at (940) 397-4239 tell dispatch where you are and why that person can't evacuate.

Stay Informed: If the decision is made by emergency management to do a campus evacuation, follow their directive. An MSUAlert will be issued. 

Try not to make a phone call unless it is to emergency services. During times of emergency's cell phone towers get overwhelmed and drop calls.

 

After an Explosion:

Stay Informed: Continue to listen to university officials to stay updated about the incident.

Contact Your Family and Loved Ones: Let your family and close friends know that you're okay, so they can help spread the word. Text messages or social media are more reliable forms of communication than phone calls.

Follow Emergency Personnel: Listen to university officials and follow their guidance. Watch for hazards and damages. Stay out of damaged buildings and the incident area. 

Keep Away: A family reunification center, family assistance & victim information center will be set up as soon a the incident is under control. For persons of the media, a PIO post will be set up as soon as possible as well.
